Mmm…Canada, The Savoury Edition

Tourtière 2Tourtière 3

Jasmine at Confessions of a Cardamom Addict is hosting an event called: Mmm...Canada, The Savoury Edition.

She wants to hear our stories about which savoury dishes or drinks tastes like Canada to us.

To me it all comes down to tradition. That's what keeps up together as a family. I was raised in Québec and we have dishes that we have been eating with my family since I was young. We have some meals that we cook year after years, during the Holidays, when we are all together. Some recipes were passed down from my grandmother. We still make ragoût (which is meatballs with pork hocks) and we love to eat tourtière (meat pie). I think every household in Québec have on different recipe of tourtière. We have our own family recipe, that my mother shared with us, then when we visit my husband's parents his mother makes a different version. This year my sister was hosting a party for New Year Eve and her boyfriend made different version of a tourtière. It was excellent. We traditionally serve tourtière with mashed potatoes, coleslaw, beets and fresh bread.

On other occasions we love our baked beans, pea soup, buckwheat pancakes, old-fashioned beef in red wine, cipaille (layered meat pie).

The most important of all is that we are all together to share these scrumptious meal. We love our food in Canada and we like to share it with family and friends.

Toffee Bits Triangles - End of the Day Treat

Toffee Bits Triangles

It's exams week and my two sons like to study with friends. We had a house full today. So I decided to prepare a treat for the end of the day. It was well received.

I started by looking in the pantry to see what I had available. I found a package of Toffee Bits and wanted to do something with it. I searched on the Hershey's Kitchen website and found this delicious recipe for Toffee Bits Triangles. I had to try it right away. This recipe makes a lot. You can even make it to bring at the office or at a potluck event.

The crust is made of butter, brown sugar, flour and some toffee bits. You only bake it for 20 min. and then spread over the crust some chocolate chips and the remaining of the Toffee Bits. I don't think they'll stay in the house long. This is recipe is definitively a repeater in my house.

Chocolate-Topped Peanut-Toffee Bars - The Million Dollar Recipe

Chocolate-Topped Peanut-Toffee Bars

We're invited at friend's house tonight because my husband retired from the military and they want to celebrate us. So I wanted to bring something. I decided to make those Chocolate-Topped Peanut-Toffee Bars. That recipe was the Grand Prize-Winning Recipe 2007 for Betty Crocker.

You start with a peanut butter cookie base. This first layer cooks for 10 min. in the oven. Then you add a second layer of peanuts, chips and a mix of butter & brown sugar. Back in the oven. Once cooked you add two cups of chocolate chips for the third layer. These bars, with the addition of chips, are crunchy.

This recipe pass the test with my teenagers. I hope everyone enjoys tonight.
