Fall is my favorite season. There is a smell in the air that is different from the other seasons. I was raised on a farm and we could appreciate all of the fresh vegetables directly from the garden. At this time of the year we would get ready for the winter. We would keep some vegetables for the winter months in a cool place. Also one of my favorite activity was going apple picking with my family. This was a tradition. We would pick bushels of apples. We would appreciate being outdoor, smelling the fresh air, looking at the gorgeous leaves that are so beautiful in the fall.
As soon as we would get back home we would start peeling tons of apples to prepare applesauce. One of my memories was seeing my mom at the kitchen table with big piles of apple peels in front of her on a piece of newspaper.
Beside preparing applesauce she would make a really good apple crisp. Mom only had few cookbooks and she was referring to The Five Roses Cookbook for recipes most of the time. As a matter of fact, this is the first cookbook I bought when I got married. At a very young age I spent hours reading this cookbook. What I did when she was preparing the apple crisp was steeling apples, directly from the bowl, that had just been sprinkled with sugar.
The past Saturday I went to the farmer's market and bought really good apples. I could not wait to be back home and prepare an apple crisp. On Tuesday night, my son Maxime, prepared the apple crisp with a little help from me. We had the most wonderful smell in the house and could not wait to taste it. It was so good and it brought back good memories of the past. He also took the pictures for my blog. There is no apple crisp left. I think we will be making another one before winter. It was nice to be able to spend time in the kitchen, with my son, and also to prepare a dessert that my mom was baking for us every Fall.
Recipe:
Apple Crisp

Fall finally arrived TODAY here in Southern California. Until now it has been about 88 degrees. Nice, cool, crisp morning today, however!

Fall is definitely my favorite season and apple crisp is one of my favorite desserts. I haven't gone apple picking but we bought a whole bunch of apples at the farmer's market, this will certainly be one of the desserts I manke with them. :)

I adore fall, apples and good memories and of course a wonderful apple crisp to go with it all.
This is such a perfect picture of comfort food at its best. This is my favorite way to enjoy crispy, juicy apples. I add the ice cream and I do add a slice of extra sharp cheddar.

I love when there are more apples than crisp and you kept the balance beautifully.
Such precious memories! I love when food relates to childhood, it's always nice to see what memories it brings back. That apple crisp looks delicious and yes, fall is all about apples (and walnuts) for me too.
Yes fall is my total fave too... something very sexy about it.. the sweaters, hats, gloves, boots, and al that girly stuff i love! I want to jump through this and eat that right now! But i'm so so so restricted from eating sweets for like 6 weeks and it's killing me!! Won't you save some for me until after I get that great news!??!! :) Thanks for love Helene!
The smell of baking apple pie or crisp is nostalgic for me as well.
The aroma of apples cooking is absolutely intoxicating. I love old-fashioned deserts like this crisp -- it absolutely says Fall to me!

Oh, I share your love of the fall. ANd nothing reminds me of fall more than pumpkins and apples. This is the perfect fall dessert--the kind that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
This sounds like the perfect treat right about now... It looks so delicious!
This recipe brings back happy memories of when we lived in Upstate New York. It's not particularly Autumnal here yet in South Carolina.
